‘Friends With Kids’ On Top 10 VOD Films List

The week’s top watched video-on-demand (VOD) films were announced Monday by Rentrak, based on data collected over the period July 9-15, with American Reunion seizing the No. 1 from 21 Jump Street.

The comedy sequel starring Seann William Scott and Alyson Hannigan is part of the successful American Pie franchise, with friends reuniting for their high school reunion. It’s collected $233.5 million with 75% from the international market.

21 Jump Street is based on the American teen cop television drama from the 1980s featuring Johnny Depp and includes a cameo by the star.

In addition to Reunion, another new film to the top ten VOD chart, released July 13, is Friends with Kids with Jon Hamm, Kristen Wiig and Megan Fox.

The remainder of the list stays relatively unchanged since last week, shuffling around the titles, such as the epic sequel Wrath of the Titans with Sam Worthington, the comedy send-up of the Snow White fairy tale Mirror Mirror starring Julia Roberts, and Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows with Robert Downey Jr. and Noomi Rapace.

Off the list are Wanderlust and indie comedy A Thousand Words with Eddie Murphy.

According to Rentrak’s OnDemand Essentials, the top ten most-viewed titles are:

1. American Reunion
2. 21 Jump Street
3. Wrath of the Titans
4. Friends With Kids
5. Mirror Mirror
6. Project X
7. Safe House
8. Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows
9. Journey 2: The Mysterious Island
10. Act of Valor

On Amazon Instant Video, The Dark Knight and Batman Begins are the new No. 1 and No. 2 films.

For television shows on Amazon’s Instant Video, Breaking Bad dominated the top spots with episodes from its fifth season. The gritty action thriller starring Bryan Cranston (John Carter) follows a man with cancer who deals drugs to care for his family.

Also, action series Falling Skies, the sci-fi drama starring Noah Wyle (E.R.), as well as Florida-set crime drama The Glades and office politics show Suits fill remaining spots on the VOD list.

Box Office: ‘Friends With Kids’

After having the first two months of 2012 largely led by Oscar-hungry holdovers, the specialty market saw a new crop of films finally take over. According to estimates provided by Rentrak earlier today, “Friends With Kids,” “Footnote,” “Salmon Fishing in Yemen” and “Jiro Dreams of Sushi” all found very strong debuts this weekend.

Here’s the rundown:

“Friends With Kids” (Roadside Attractions)
While not exactly “Bridesmaids” money, Roadside Attractions saw a very promising opening from Jennifer Westfeldt’s romantic comedy “Friends With Kids.” Starring a large portion of the “Bridesmaids” cast (Jon Hamm, Kristin Wiig, Maya Rudolph and Chris O’Dowd), as well as Adam Scott, Megan Fox, Ed Burns and Westfeldt herself, the Toronto Film Festival pickup took in $2,169,374 from an aggressive 374 screens. That made for a very respectable $5,801 per-theater-average ahead of an expansion to 600 screens next weekend.

“We had a great opening on Jennifer Westfeldt’s very smart comedy ‘Friends With Kids,'” Roadside Attractions’ Howard Cohen said. “Our starry cast did a firestorm of press and electronic outlets and our exits show we got a great female as well as date crowd very evenly spread from 18 – 60.”
